Japan-based vendor Sony Mobile Communications has set target shipments of 50 million smartphones for fiscal year 2014 (April 2014-March 2015) and the vendor is likely to release orders for 20-25 million units, 40-50% of the target shipments, to Taiwan-based ODMs FIH Mobile, Compal Communications and Arima Communications, according to Taiwan-based makers.
Sony Mobile set target shipments of 46 million smartphones for fiscal year 2013 and had lowered the goal to 42 million units and further to 40 million units. The company actually shipped 39.1 million units, the sources pointed out. Despite unsatisfactory shipments in fiscal year 2013, Sony Mobile scored points in selling mid-range and high-end models and had its handset business operation swinging from the red into profitability, the sources indicated.
Arima Communications is expected to obtain Sony Mobile orders for 10-12 million 3G and 4G smartphones, the most among the three Taiwan-based ODMs, the sources pointed out. Taiwan-based ODMs, in addition to mutual competition for orders from Sony Mobile, have to compete with the vendor's R&D center in Beijing, China, the sources indicated.
